Dear Host Family
First of all, I would like to thank you that you took the time to read my letter. I am already very excited to know you. But, first of all, I would like to introduce myself to you.
My name is Phenny Katanga. I am 24 years old and I am from a city called Windhoek, which is the capital city of Namibia. I was born and raised in the city. My native language is Oshiwambo, but I grew up speaking English. With my parents, Selma (55) and Edward (63), and my four siblings, Toini (29), Loise (27), and my younger sister Delila (21). My older sister Toini has a son who is 3 years old. I adore him so much. My mom use to work in the Police and my Dad used to work in the military as a Lieutenant but now has retired. I live with a loving, caring, joyful and respectful family. We tend to be loud when we are around each other. I would describe my family as being down to earth. Dancing would be part of what we enjoy doing the most. Together with my family, we live in a community known as Wanaheda. It is a suburb in Windhoek in the Khomas Region of central Namibia. It is a 20-minute drive to the shopping center.
I would describe myself as a reliable, friendly, positive, helpful, caring, fun and open-minded woman who is interested in getting to know new cultures and people. In my free time, I love doing different kind of sports (e.g. playing netball and rope-skipping), bowling, playing games, cooking and trying out new recipes and sometimes also hiking. I enjoy camping, listening to music, and going shopping with friends or going to the cinema. Dancing would be one of my favorite hobbies. Furthermore, I enjoy reading a good book and singing- even though I cannot sing. Most of the holidays, I would go volunteer at a children’s program and help out the children with their homework, play games with them and just get to know them better.
My greatest goal had to have been my graduation which was far one of my biggest goals I’ve had throughout my college/university life. I majored in Travel, Tourism and Hospitality Management, which was far most one of the best courses I’ve enjoyed learning. My future goals would be being able to succeed in life and become a better version of person. Getting married and having a beautiful family of my own, having a small restaurant of my own and becoming an executive manager of one of the biggest hotels worldwide. Travelling the world and exploring new things would be one of my greatest achievements.
For the past 3 years I have volunteered at a children’s program in my community. I helped them with their homework and after that, we would play a few games, pretend to be actors and actresses, we would draw and paint our drawings. I have also taken care of children from all different ages of different families. I became very close to them and I cherish the time I have spent with them. Grace (8) is one bubbly and loving girl I have met. We enjoy baking together, we dance and play dress up doll and pretend to be princesses. Silver (10) he isn’t really much of a speaker but we enjoy playing soccer together and playing with his toys. Nashe (7) enjoys reading and writing story books, painting, making fun videos and playing with her dolls. Sometimes we would go to the playground and play with the other kids. Mihco (12) enjoys playing games, dancing, playing soccer and we love styling our hair. On some weekend I would take her for play dates with her friends and later go swimming. My daily duties were to prepare food for the children, take them to school, and make sure they were ready for their extra activities after school, such as going for their swimming lessons and soccer lessons. My favorite activities with the children were to sing, dance, play dress up, play lots of different games and play hide-and-seek. I also take care of my nephew when his mother would go to work. Through this time, I have found out how much fun it is to have children around, I can’t imagine a life without them.
My interest in living in Germany would be that the people are the friendliest. Getting around everywhere is easy and doesn’t cost much as people use bicycles. Seeing different attractions that Germany has to offer. Being part of your family will give me so much joy and happiness. Accepting me in your lovely home and allowing me to take care of the children gives me so much happiness. The reason why I want to become an au pair is that I really want to experience the daily life and to learn more about your fascinaties culture. I’m matured and I’m used to taking responsibilities, both for others and myself. Being able to help raise and educate kids in a positive way and becoming their big sister. I get to interact with different people from all over the world and get to travel a lot. Most importantly, it would be a great chance to spend an entire year surrounded by children. And of course, it would be great to learn a different language.
I hope we can develop a good friendship, working and living together as a family. I would be very happy to experience an eventful year with you and your kids. I am looking forward to talking to you.

Kind regard
